If you happened to meet this post and have not read my other SEO for beginners guides, I urge you to start from the very beginning. It's a series and in this series, I intend to drive you through all the basic SEO practices a beginner should learn and make use of. The navigation bar below will lead you through articles in this series.

    BlogSpot SEO Basic Topics Outline

    Back to topic!.

Images are not just for humans they are for search engines too. You might have been uploading images to your blog and not optimizing them! and this might have also been one of your drawbacks in your SEO practices. There is a ranking power behind blog images and you need to make good use of them.

    Why Optimize images?

Avoiding drawbacks is essential for you and your blog. Not optimizing images is one very drawback you need to avoid. Images are uploaded for just 2 reasons:
    1. for the audience
    2. for the search.
Images have their own search result page and if not properly used your blog post won't rank as expected. They also help improve your post structure. Help search engines better understand your blog post, deliver proper information to your audience and much more.

When not used for good! it will work against you. You could lose a portion of your ranking power by simply neglecting images.

Why would images have their own titles? if they are not important.

Why use images in a blog post?

Like I rightly said images are for search and humans. The images for search can bring traffic, it can boost up the rank of your post (this is if optimized properly), it can also generate high CTR in images search.

On the other hand, Images for humans make your blog post more relevant and understandable. Humans tend to read meaning to images and if your images are descriptive enough, then users will find your post more relevant.

5 Things you should know about Images

    1. Image URL
    2. The Alt tag
    3. Title Tag
    4. Copyright
    5. Number of images

    Image URL

You might have never taken this into consideration probably because you have failed to realize its importance. The URL of your image is a relation property of your image. How? When the URL of your image is related to the "alt and title" tags then it becomes SEO optimized.

How do you improve the URL of your image?

Whenever you create or download an image with intentions to use in your blog post, don't just upload without editing the name of the image.

Blogger & WordPress media managers generate the URL of your image from the name it was saved with in your computer. So if your image had a name such as "blogging for beginners" then when you upload it that would be the URL.

Which is by far more SEO optimized than an image with URL that contains pure numbers and keywords not related to the blog post.

So do well to always rename your images in your computer before your upload them to your blog post.

    The Alt Tag

The alt tag is the most important of the two tags. This is the title of images in regards to search engines. Whenever you fail to include the alt tag in your image, search engines would not see any relationship between that image and your blog and therefore they won't rank it.

It is highly recommended for you. You should not ignore this tag because it is the most important tag to search engines and you should try to include keywords in it.

How to write the perfect Alt tag

When it comes to writing the alt title, 2 things should come in your mind.
    1. It should be relevant to the post
    2. It should contain my main keyword
The alt title should be relevant to your main content because search engines expect your image to be related to your post so if your alt title contains keywords not used in your post's content, then your image won't add a ranking signal to your post.

To keep the alt title related to the entire post, try to include your main keyword in the alt title by doing so you will be able to keep the image's importance to that post.

    The Title Tag

This is generally for your audience and in other terms still, help improve your SEO. Search engines want to make sure your image has importance and also to know that you are not just spamming with it.

This is why you should keep the title tag, alt tag and image URL related to each other. They should match and if possible should contain the same keywords.

How to write a good title tag

Basically, the title of an image is what users see when they hover over the image and also when they download the image. To write a good one, try to describe what is in the image or write the same thing as the alt tag.

In that way, you don't go out of point with the title tag. Your blog post is for both search engines and humans and with the title tag, you can optimize your images for your audience without appearing to care more about SEO.

How to set the alt and title tag in blogger

    1. After uploading the image, add it to your post
    2. Right click the images to set its properties.
    3. Locate "Properties" and click
    4. You should see the field for Title Text and ALT Text.
    5. OK when done.

    Copyright

This disqualifies everything above!. If you copy an image from the web then that image will have the same title, URL & alt tag with the original version of it. This will signal search engines of a copied content. This can affect your blog's ranking and also approval to affiliate programs.

If you copy any image from the internet, do well to include the credit properties of that image else you are treating your entire blog as spam and Search engines won't hesitate to punish you.

You could easily download free images without copyright from specific images source and prevent yourself from the copied content tag. Images can kill you and this is where it all happens.

The number of images per post

Simply because images are important doesn't tell you to load up your blog post with images. What matters is your content and if you have too many images it will increase the size of your page. is that good or bad? it's bad.

Having up to 4 images per post depending on their relevance is OK. Try to avoid too many images in your blog post, instead write more text content and use fewer images.

Often times having just the first image will do the job but if you are writing a tutorial post that requires a lot of images, try to increase the number of text you have between images.

    Rounding Up

Images are good for your blog. Your audience will enjoy good images so will search engines.

As long as you keep your images relevant to your post and also you avoid adding too many images to one post, you will get featured in the image search.

Your post will also get a little boost in ranks. Hope this post has taught you more about images.

    Hi Prince,

This is a very detailed post, i only use enough images when writing tutorials.

Sure, images are cool, readers love em but too much is bad. There are times I write contents without a single image, I only give a featured image on the homepage.

Do have a nice day buddy!

Images do help with ranking but its more important to be use unique images if you are looking to have your images rank. In addition, adding too many images is actually a hinderance for your users. Make sure to find the healthy balance and they can help your post rank but more importantly be valuable to your users.
